A One-Day Koan Meditation Retreat with Jesse Cardin, Sensei in Grey Forest, Texas
Koan: Who is hearing?
We all do so many things every day to maintain our selves. We primp and strut, hide or defend against perceived attackers, tell ourselves uplifting stories or depressing ones, prove ourselves to others and justify our decisions, guilt-trip and seek fulfillment through self-improvement and positive reinforcement and pleasing others or our own appetites. But what, exactly, is this “self” that we’re all working so hard to maintain?
In a recent New York Times online article, English actor Emma Thompson describes falling down this rabbit-hole: “There’s lots of these roles that are in fact imposed on you by society, for years and years and years, then you suddenly go — am I any of those things? And if I’m not, who am I? I was always so sure. As it turns out, I have no idea.”
What an excellent place to be.
